Director Danis Tanovic, who won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2002 for his Balkan civil war drama "No Man's Land," is back in the Oscar mix this year as Bosnia and Herzegovina have selected his latest film "Cirkus Columbia" as their awards hopeful.
The film, set just before the Yugoslav war follows "a businessman who returns from 20 years exile in Germany to evict his wife— who failed to join him in exile — from the family home" and reportedly touches upon similar thematic territory to his previous films. You can check out the non-subtitled trailer below to get a feel for the picture.
The news will help take the sting out of Tanovic's previous outing, "Triage," starring Colin Farrell and Paz Vega, going straight to DVD in North America. The film, which got decent notices at TIFF in 2009, seemed to suffer from the acquisitions drought of that year and ended up never finding a home. The story follows a war journalist (Farrell) who captures shocking photos of atrocities in Kurdistan, but who seems most bothered by the disappearance of his friend (Jamie Sives). It's now available on home video.
Final foreign film nominees will be announced on January 25th, with the Oscars taking place on February 27th. [Variety]
